Bloody brilliant. A twat points an airgun at an 18 month old child's head and pulls the trigger to scare the child, we all suffer. :(

Up here a druggie decided to plink at the firemen attending to a fire, but he shot (and it killed the child) a wee boy in his big brother's arms.

To be honest, that was just the last 'icing on the cake' of a long list of niggling offences with airguns. Urbanised nation and all that.

The writing was on the wall when they licensed them in Scotland. It was inevitable.
Were I a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy type I'd say that those in power don't want the people armed and capable of an insurrection and want to market the notion that the state will protect us....

[IRONY]Preposterous! That would imply that governments prefer dependent, acquiescent serfs to empowered assertive citizens![/IRONY]

On the whole, I think robust licensing of all firearms, and a huge purge and come down like a ton of bricks on illegal ones, would not be a bad thing.
That way folks who shoot as a hobby, from the handguns to the sportsmen, as well as the folks who use the guns as part of their living, could actually do so without social disapproval constantly nibbling away and grinding them down.
If the laws were actually enforced properly too, then the numpties wouldn't be in a position to be a bother to the rest of society....like the scrotes that killed and injured infants.

Hah, yeah, and we live in an idyll

You seem to be hinting that the Draconian firearms laws put in place by our wonderful Executive are ineffective.
Be fair, they meant well, but with thousands of weapons flooding into the country, into the hands of scofflaws, coupled with the massive reductions in Police and Border control resources, it is rather difficult to stop bad things happening.

It therefore makes sense to cut down the numbers in the hands of folk who actually obey the law, so that the press can put the populace' minds to rest, by showing that things are in hand.

Yeah: We can have lots of photo opportunities for senior police officers to brandish confiscated rusty, springless .177" air rifles like a princess holding an Irish navvy's cock. They can then pontificate about "If it saves only one child's life...", talking as though they've just defused a bomb in an orphanage.

Let's see: 500,000 air rifles in Scotland, and 2,624 applications for licences... That makes 497,376 criminals created at the stroke of a pen. Sheer political genius.

And all of those air rifles for which owners couldn't be arsed to spend £72 buying a licence, yet didn't see why they should surrender for nothing? How many of those ended up like the tens of thousands of pump- and semi-auto shotguns that vanished into the black market after Hungerford? Lots more opportunities for politicians to strut and preen on the telly, while looking grave and intoning that "Much has been done, yet more remains to be accomplished."

One final point: Will the fucking press please stop reporting that so-and-so was "killed by an air rifle". He was killed by a criminal who happened to be using an air rifle rather than a knife, hammer or boot.

There is little point in trying to apply logic to this farce, Scott.:sad03:
